GENERAL
OOC Name: Vell. Other Characters: Desgevell.
Name: Bretol (bray-toll). Gender: Male. Age: Eighteen. Orientation: Heterosexual. Order: Flame. Rank: Follower. Occupation: Performer.
PERSONALITY
Positive Traits: → Friendly. He’s always ready to share a joke and tease, but he is also exceptionally kind. He does all he can in order to help those who look troubled.
→ Pacifist. While he does occasionally act as a soldier during the worse war periods, he never looks forward to battle and hates the thought of killing others. He uses his fighting skills only as a last resort in everyday life, usually threatening people up until fighting is the only option.
→ Optimistic. He looks for the best in life, trying to view the beauty of the world and being grateful for what he already has. He doesn’t quite understand why others are upset and tries to spread his good will to cheer them up, as well.
→ Quiet. When he isn’t being obnoxious to strangers, he is pretty quiet and almost shy. He doesn’t needlessly irritate people when he’s calm and will only speak to someone if they approach him first, unless they especially interest him. Sometimes this quiet nature leads to a thoughtful one; he’s often seen daydreaming.
→ Leadership. He has qualities that allow him to capture the attention of others and instill his beliefs in them. Usually, he uses this to round up other troublemakers.
Negative Traits: → Mischievous. He gets into trouble easily through pulling pranks. Usually these are mostly harmless, but while kids might look up to him for it, mature adults hate it. Sometimes he might cause actual harm, such as monetary loss, to someone he pranks, such as a vendor.
→ Unable to handle emotions. It isn’t easy to upset him, but it affects him heavily when he is troubled, and it’s very obvious. He is very helpless when he is angry, unable to talk or argue, usually storming off and needed to vent. He tries to hide when he’s sad, though that effort is almost always in vain and changes his personality substantially.
→ Reckless. He takes more risks than he should to brag about it later, usually only when he’s bothering people, sometimes by going too far on a dare or threatening someone. He doesn’t watch what he says and usually pays for the consequences.
→ Callow. He’s quite green and inexperienced, and it shows in how he acts around others. He doesn’t always understand the big picture or view the world as an adult might and so has yet to face most of the troubles of the world.
→ Ignores potential. He is very content where he is in life, as a performer and not a big star. Everyone tells him that he could do greater things with his magic and leadership abilities, but he ignores all of them. This stems in part from a lack of confidence in himself, and part from laziness when it comes to the big picture.
Fears: → Drowning. → Suffocation. → Using his magic in battle.
Quirks: → Tendency to give performance money to first person he sees in need. → Trademark bandana. → Usually holds knife in teeth. → Prefers to fight dirty. → Never uses magic in battle.
Ideals: → Charity. → Optimism. → Inner and outer beauty.
Overall: A regular troublemaking teenager, cheerful and kindhearted, he makes a good first impression unless you are the victim of his prank. He has great potential as a leader and performer, though he ignores his abilities and prefers to lead a simpler life. He is optimistic and pacifistic to a point, believing with all his heart that the Order of Flame doesn’t need to war with the others in order to gain control or prevent Vysec. Overall, despite his nice qualities, on the street he would be completely overlooked. Only when he is performing, using his magic to create drawings and flame figures in the night air, would someone spare him a passing glance.
APPEARANCE
Hair Color: Dirty-blonde. Eye Color: Brown. Skin Color: Deeply tanned. Clothing: He dresses up on almost no occasion. Instead, he usually throws on a neutral-toned, light-colored shirt that may be slashed open to bare his chest. He is fond of leather wrist guards for decoration rather than for archery. His pants or shorts, usually tan and baggy, are held up by a belt with a sheath for his knife that he never uses. Other notable accessories are his brown corded necklace and, perhaps most infamously, a brown bandana with a skull design on it which is usually covering in his messy hair. Weapons: Fighting knife. Height: 5'10" Weight: 135 lbs Overall: Bretol looks taller than he is, mostly in part to his lanky build and lack of outstanding muscle, leaving his arms skinny. He would be seen as cute rather than handsome but, overall, wouldn’t stand out to anyone. He is much tanned from being in the sun most of his life. His hair is a dirty-blonde mop perched on his head. His eyes are round, expressive, and dark brown. He looks careless to most that pass him, with his uninspiring attire and gangly body. Picture: None.
HISTORY
Family: Makaio, father. Rayen, mother. History: Bretol was born in the warmth of late spring, to proud parents Makaio and Rayen, a warrior and flame-dancer respectively. Ever since he could walk, he was causing mischief. Important reports would go missing, books strewn across the floor, the family dog yelping around the house with the child tugging on its tail.
Despite his trouble, he was well-liked by most. At nine, he was taken to the palace and introduced to some of the lieutenants. He was so intrigued that everyone knew that he would become a loyal follower of the Flame. But he was proved wrong. He made life hell for most of the citizens, pulling pranks on the vendors, snatching food, among other things. He even led his own gang of preteens that caused trouble through the streets of the villages. Declaring himself their leader, he stole his trademark bandana. For this, he was threatened with banishment, an empty threat from his parents that broke up the group.
Makaio taught him how to fight with weaponry, while Rayen taught him the art of the Flame. He took to his mother’s lessons and began performing for his money, often a small attraction in festivals for Laska. At fourteen, he gained an admirer, a girl not practiced with magic that he promised to tutor until she went off to use her magic in battle. She would become small milestone in his life, a brief first girlfriend.
Bretol’s first battle came when he was almost sixteen. He lost a few of his friends, common amongst battles between the Orders. He was more skilled in magic and had to rely on that to defeat his opponents, but he hated more than anything else to see the beautiful potential of the flames used to burn the enemy. Suddenly, childishly, he made a resolution to not use his gift to fight. It was then that a knife pressed close to his throat, but through a kick to the groin and throwing some dirt in the face, he stole the weapon. Recognizing it as a dead comrade’s, he decided to keep it to preserve the memory and out of necessity due to his promise. It would never leave him.
Bretol was promoted when he came of age. It’s been a couple of years, and he’s decided that as a follower he would mostly take on the duty of performing in festivals—though he always keep his knife sharpened. Most of the citizens in the smaller villages under Laska know him due to his performances even if few of them know his name or recognize him on the street.
